Body
The Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program is the primary provider of federal criminal justice funding to the State and units of local government. JAG funds support all components of the criminal justice system, from multi-jurisdictional drug and gang task forces, to crime prevention and domestic violence programs, courts, corrections, treatment, and justice information sharing initiatives. JAG awards are based on a statutory formula that involves computing an allocation for each state and territory, based on their share of violent crimes and population (weighted equally) with each state's share being a minimum of 0.25% of the total appropriation. Each state's final award amount is then divided between the State and local governments at a rate of 60 and 40 percent respectively. The local governments share is allocated to the individual governments based on their share on the state's 3-year violent crime average with a minimum allocation of $10,000. All allocations under $10,000 are returned to the state to be awarded through a separate application process.

BJA estimates that it will make up to 1,147 local awards totaling $84,500,000.
