ISLAND ANNEXATION REQUEST FOR CITY OF VALLEY CENTER PURSUANT TO CITY OF VALLEY CENTER RESOLUTION NO. 654-16, AS AMENDED BY RESOLUTION NO. 657-16.

RECOMMENDED ACTION: Find that the proposed annexation will not hinder or prevent the proper growth and development of the area or that of any other incorporated city located in Sedgwick County; and therefor approve the resolution.

The City of Valley Center ("City") adopted Resolution No. 654-16 pursuant to K.S.A. 12-520c that requests the Sedgwick County Board of County Commissioners make a finding that the proposed annexation will not hinder or prevent the proper growth and development of the area or that of any other incorporated city located in Sedgwick County. Island annexations are done at the request or with the consent of the landowners whose land is being annexed. In this instance, Unified School District No. 262 (Valley Center School District) passed a motion and resolution on June 13, 2016 requesting the City to complete the island annexation. The land proposed to be annexed includes the recently constructed Valley Center High School. The area requested for annexation is generally located on the northeast corner of the intersection of 93rd Street North and Meridian.
MAPD staff has reviewed the proposed annexation and recommends approving the annexation and finding that the annexation will not hinder or prevent the proper growth and development of the area or of any other city, as long as the City also island annexes, concurrent with this island annexation request, the west half of the Meridian Street right-of-way and the south half of the 93rd Street North right-of-way.
