A public hearing is required to adopt a new platform lift and stairway chairlift safety standard within the Unified Building and Trade Code (UBTC) to replace the existing platform lift and stairway chairlift safety standard. In this case, the 2017 Safety Standard for Platform Lifts and Stairway Chairlifts (ASME A18.1) published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), is proposed to be adopted with various amendments, additions, and omissions.
The proposed adoption was extensively reviewed by the Electrical Board and MABCD Electrical/Elevator staff. The Electrical Board reviewed the code, recognizing the need for increased safety for the public using platform lifts and stairway chairlifts and to attempt to minimize the possibility of injury to the public and the accessibility lift mechanics. The Electrical Board reviewed the proposed code changes and approved the proposed amendments (4-0) for presentation and recommendation to the County Commission and City Council for adoption.
Alternatives: The Board of County Commissioners may choose to vote to not approve the resolution.
