Recommended Action: Approve the recommended action for a salary exception request to hire above the grade minimum.
Per policy 4.2001, new hires with starting salaries 10% above minimum require approval from the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC). This request is to start the candidate at a salary of $33,800 beginning on March 19, 2018; the minimum salary for the position is $26,012. The candidate previously worked as a Zoo Maintenance Worker from 1999-2015, 16 years, a significant benefit in reduced orientation needs. The candidate left the zoo and acquired on the job training in welding techniques and HVAC systems, another significant benefit. He is a proven asset within the department and worked well with the other team members. The candidate is requesting to return very near his departing salary amount.
Alternatives: Approve a lower above minimum starting pay rate.
Financial Considerations: This position is funded under cost center 55001-110. Adequate budget exists to support the requested salary, no additional budget authority is being requested.
Legal Considerations: This action is authorized by K.S.A. 19-212. A simple majority vote is required.
