Presented by: Chris W. Labrum, Director of Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department (MABCD).

Body

A public hearing was held on October 18, 2017 to discuss the potential adoption of a new national electrical code within the Unified Building and Trade Code (UBTC) to replace the existing national electrical code. In this case, the 2017 National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), is proposed to be adopted, with various amendments, additions, and omissions that are included within the resolution.

The National Electrical Code was approved as an American National Standard on August 24, 2016. The Board of Electrical Appeals and MABCD staff reviewed the 2017 edition of the NEC over an eight month period, beginning in November 2016. The Board and staff solicited input from various electrical trade organizations which included the IEC (Independent Electrical Contractors), NECA (National Electrical Contractors Association), and other interested individuals. The Electrical Board reviewed and approved the code along with the proposed amendments for presentation and recommendation to the County Commission and City Council for adoption.
