Body

Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Training Objectives

Effective coordination with the staff and timely dissemination of information can help reduce pressure on those who are the most vulnerable. Assistance with benefits and other administrative issues can reduce the burden on victims and families. The Sheriff's Office currently works with Employee Assistance Consultants (EMPAC) to ensure there is a professional mental health representative available. EMPAC also provides materials and one-on-one support.

This is the most recent information for CISM training and is a basic The International Critical Incident Stress Foundation Group Debriefing and PEER training course.  This course will provide the attendees a comprehensive, integrated, systematic, and multi-tactic crisis intervention approach to manage stress from critical incidents after traumatic events. CISM is a coordinated program of tactics that are linked and blended together to minimize the negative reactions to traumatic experiences that emergency service personnel are exposed to.

Class information:

Cost of the training is a minimum of $2,500. There is an additional cost for books and materials, an estimated $55 to $65 per student. With a 40 person class ($2,500 for instructors and $2,600 for books/materials) the Department is estimating a minimum of $5,100 per class. The average class sizes are 20 to 40 (low and high examples).

Anticipating a delivery of a minimum of two to three classes per year over a two year period within Sedgwick County and the immediate surrounding area, total cost estimates would be approximately $30,600 to instruct and certify 240 law enforcement officers.

In speaking with other non-local law enforcement agencies, there is an identified interest in such training throughout many smaller agencies outside of Sedgwick County. Enlisting the assistance of the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC), the primary state level law enforcement training academy in Kansas, a much larger audience would clearly be identified. If the Sheriff's Office were to open up the training across the state with the assistance of KLETC, it is felt the number of classes could easily double in a long term, multi-year program. It would be estimated that the demand could potentially grow another two to four classes per year, certifying an additional 80 to 120 law enforcement officers. With that forecast, estimated funding would need to increase by up to an additional $20,400, totaling $51,000 in requested grant funding.
