Body

Donation of a Grain Cofferdam to Sedgwick County Fire District #1.   The donation will be an asset to the Heavy Rescue Team and will assist in their rescue efforts.

Flowing grain can be as dangerous as quicksand, creating a suction that can pull you under quickly. In fact, a 6-foot man can be up to his knees in grain within two to five seconds and can be completely buried in a grain bin within 15 to 25 seconds depending on the size of the auger being used. This powerful force is the reason why suffocation is the leading cause of death in grain bins.

KANZA Coop is willing to donate a safety devise that is top of the line in grain engulfment rescue. This devise is called a Grain Cofferdam. A Grain Cofferdam is made of aluminum panels that can be pushed down in the grain around a trapped person and locked together to form a barrier. Rescuers can then vacuum or scoop grain out of the locked barrier, enabling the person to be removed.

Financial Considerations: The value of the donation is $4,270.46.

Policy Considerations: The Board of County Commissioners as the governing body of Sedgwick County Fire District 1 has the authority to accept donations on behalf of the Fire District.

Outside Attendees: Nick Krehbiel, Chief Compliance Officer, KANZA Coop.
