RECOMMENDED ACTION: Authorize the addition of 20 part-time Firefighter positions to the Fire District staffing table, effective immediately.

In accordance with the contract between Sedgwick County Fire District #1 and Local 2612, the Fire District has the ability to hire part-time firefighters. The Fire District is requesting 20 part-time positions to be added to the District's staffing table. Filling these 20 positions will provide a pool of eligible workers that could be called in to cover when staff is out sick, on vacation or at a training exercise.
Alternatives: Not add the additional positions to the staffing table.
Financial Considerations: As shown in the table below, the annual cost of a part-time employee working the maximum 1,000 hours is $15,416. The cost will vary between a minimum of $15,416 and a max of $308,320. The Fire District does not anticipate all 20 part-time employees working the maximum hours in a year, but would like to have the pool to ensure availabilty of personnel to fill in as needed. The starting salary would be the same as a full-time firefighter, $14.008 per hour. Per Budget, the Fire District's 2016 adopted personnel budget can support the additional cost.
