The Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program is the primary provider of federal criminal justice funding to state and local jurisdictions. JAG funds support all components of the criminal justice system, from multi-jurisdictional drug and gang task forces to crime prevention and domestic violence programs, courts, corrections, treatment and justice information sharing initiative. JAG awards are based on a statutory formula that involves computing an allocation for each state and territory, based on their share of violent crimes and population with each states share being a minimum of .25% of the total appropriation. Each state's final award amount is them divided between the state and local governments at a rate of 60 and 40 percent respectively. The local governments share is allocated to the individual governments based their share on the state's 3-year violent crime average with a minimum allocation of $10,000. All allocations under $10,000 are returned to the state to be awarded through a seperate application process.
