Title

Agreement for Director/Chief Toxicologist Services for the Regional Forensic Science Center.

Body

Recommended Action: Approve contract and authorize Chairman to sign.

The Regional Forensic Science Center (RFSC) provides pathologist-directed autopsies to determine cause and manner of death of those individuals who die and come under jurisdiction (violent and/or questionable deaths) of the District Coroner.  In addition the Center functions as the "crime laboratory" for all law enforcement agencies within Sedgwick County.  The RFSC interacts daily with all enforcement operations in the County, as well as the rest of the criminal justice system.  The Center also provides autopsy services to several other Kansas counties on a cost a "cost recovery fee" basis.  Dr. Rohrig, the current RFSC Director, has held this position since January 2007.  Dr. Rohrig joined the RFSC in June 2000 when he assumed the duties of Director of Forensic Laboratories and Chief Toxicologist which he continues to provide in addition to his Center Director duties.  This agreement will maintain continuity of leadership for the Center for the next three years with a two year automatic renewable term.

Alternatives:  Not execute agreement and begin national search for a RFSC Director.

Financial Considerations:  Per the attached, in return for services and performance of duties as Director/Chief Toxicologist of the RFSC the annual compensation is $174,785 and a vehicle allowance of $3,000 per year.  No increase was requested.  Both the annual compensation and annual vehicle allowance amounts are equal to current compensation levels.

Legal Considerations: This agreement has been approved by the County Counselor's Office.

Policy Considerations: none
