CONSIDERATION OF GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF $306,097.00 FOR THE 2015 EDWARD J. BYRNE JUSTICE ASSISTANCE GRANT: 2015 PUBLIC SAFETY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM.

RECOMMENDED ACTION: Open the public hearing, accept public comments and close the public hearing. Approve the grant application and related Agreement with the City of Wichita and authorize the Chairman or his designee to submit the application through the Justice Department Grants Management System (GMS) and accept a grant award agreement containing substantially the same terms and conditions as the application. Approve establishment of budget authority at the time the grant documents are executed.

The Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program is the primary provider of federal criminal justice funding to state and local jurisdictions. JAG funds support all components of the criminal justice system, from multi-jurisdictional drug and gang task forces to crime prevention and domestic violence programs, courts, corrections, treatment and justice information sharing initiative.
JAG funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support and information systems for criminal justice for one or more of the following categories:
- Law enforcement programs;
- Prosecution and court programs;
- Prevention and education programs;
- Corrections and community corrections programs;
- Drug treatment and enforcement programs;
- Planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and
- Crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The process for allocating JAG funds is based on population and crime statistics.
This year, Sedgwick County and the City of Wichita were allocated $306,097.00 in JAG grant funds. Funds will be distributed evenly between the two jurisdictions via an Agreement. S...
