Title
DONATION OF 135 GARDEN SEED PACKETS VALUED AT $270.00 TO BE USED FOR YOUTH PROGRAMMING AT THE JUVENILE DETENTION FACILITY OF THE SEDGWICK COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS.
Presented by: Larry Ternes, Youth Services Administrator.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Accept the donation and authorize the Chairman to sign a letter of appreciation.
Body
The Juvenile Detention Facility (JDF) is a 24-hour secure facility for male and female offenders and alleged offenders who are awaiting court hearings or placement by the State into residential facilities. The basic services are secure confinement, education, life skills classes, recreation and mental health counseling.
This donation will be used for gardening projects in the interior courtyard of the JDF complex. The majority of youth in the JDF have little to no experience tending to plants and are somewhat hesitant at first to get their hands dirty. But once the plants begin to grow, the youth take a great deal of ownership and pride in caring for them. With this donation of seeds, the youth will be able to fill virtually all of the open ground space in the JDF courtyard.
Alternatives: The alternative is to not accept this donation.
