Background: In April, 2011, data from the 2010 decennial census was released to Sedgwick County. This data shows a ten-year countywide population increase of 45,496, or about 10.05%. The effect on existing county commission districts is shown below:

County Commissioner districts were last redrawn in 2002 and 2003 in accordance with the 2000 decennial census.
Analysis: In redrawing county commission districts, the goal is to achieve districts that are as compact and equal in population as possible. Districts must be drawn along existing voter precinct lines. Some of the factors to be considered in altering existing districts are the area and population of each district, density of population, topography, and the effect of change in lines on existing boundaries.
Eight redistricting plans have been proposed for consideration. With a total 2010 countywide population of 498,365, the target population for each new district would be 99,673 persons.
