Title
ACKNOWLEDGE A DONATION OF $6,000 TO THE SEDGWICK COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT CHILDREN'S DENTAL CLINIC BY THE WICHITA DISTRICT DENTAL SOCIETY (WDDS).
Presented by: Claudia Blackburn, Director, Sedgwick County Health Department.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Accept the donation and authorize the Chairman to sign a thank you letter.
Body
Background: The Children's Dental Clinic provides free dental care to over 550 uninsured children each year from our community who meet eligibility requirements. Services are provided by staff hygienists, Wichita State University Hygiene students, under the direct supervision of the staff hygienists, and over 25 volunteer dentists and oral surgeons. The staff hygienists also provide free dental exams to over 17,000 Sedgwick County school children each year.
Analysis: The Children's Dental Clinic will use the funding to purchase high-grade sealant and other dental. As budgets remain flat, and the costs of materials rise, the Clinic was seeking additional funding to purchase treatment supplies that are more effective and more user-friendly. For example, the high-grade sealant lasts longer once applied to a child's teeth, which prevents them from rubbing it off, prior to being full dried and set.
Alternatives: Not accept the donation from Wichita District Dental Society, resulting in the continuous purchase of less expensive treatment supplies, which have mediocre effectiveness on improving dental outcomes of our at-risk patients.
Financial considerations: Funds are disbursed through fund center 38058-274 (Donations).
