Background: Sedgwick County has a Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 801 Stillwell. Studies have shown that the majority of customers come from within a 6 mile radius. In order to provide safe household hazardous waste disposal to our community, the County offers 5 Remote Household Hazardous Waste collection events each year. These events allow residents to bring such items as paints, oils, cleaners, solvents and other chemicals for proper disposal at a location near them. This agenda deals with a contract for a remote household hazardous waste collection event in Valley Center, Kansas. The Valley Center City Council approved this contract on April 2, 2013. The collection will take place on April 20, 2013 from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm at the Valley Center City Hall.

Financial Considerations: HHW has provided 5 remote HHW collection events every year since 2005. The funding for these events is through the Solid Waste Fee and has been placed in HHW (43001-208) contractuals for 2013. The cost of $14,000 is based on the average cost of HHW remote events in 2012. The actual cost will vary based on the number of participants and types of materials received. There are no revenues associated with this event.
Legal Considerations: The authority for this action is K.S.A. 65-3410. A simple majority vote is required.
