Background: Sedgwick County has a Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 801 Stillwell. Studies have shown that the majority of customers come from within a six mile radius. In order to provide safe household hazardous waste disposal to our community, the County offers five Remote Household Hazardous Waste collection events each year. These events allow residents to bring such items as paints, oils, cleaners, solvents, and other chemicals for proper disposal at a location near them. This agenda item addresses a contract for a remote household hazardous waste collection event at Hughes Metropolitan Complex, located at 5015 E. 29th St. N. Wichita State University approved this contract on April 19, 2018. The collection will take place on Saturday, May 19, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at designated parking lots at the Hughes Metropolitan Complex.
Alternatives: Do not provide this community service.
Financial Considerations: HHW has provided five remote HHW collection events every year since 2005. Funding for these events comes from the Solid Waste Fee and expenditure authority is included in HHW Services fund center (43001-208, Contractual Services) as part of the 2018 Adopted Budget. The cost of $14,149 is based on the average cost of HHW remote events in 2017. The actual cost will vary based on the number of participants and types of materials received. There are no revenues associated with this event.
