Body
The Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program is the primary provider of federal criminal justice funding to state and local jurisdictions. JAG funds support all components of the criminal justice system, from multi-jurisdictional drug and gang task forces to crime prevention and domestic violence programs, courts, corrections, treatment, and justice information sharing initiatives.

JAG funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following categories:

·            Law enforcement programs;
·      Prosecution and court programs;
·      Prevention and education programs;
·      Corrections and community corrections programs;
·      Drug treatment and enforcement programs;
·      Planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs;
·      Crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The process for allocating JAG funds is based on population and crime statistics.

This year, Sedgwick County and the City of Wichita were allocated $362,521 in JAG grant funds.  Funds will be distributed evenly between the two jurisdictions via an Agreement. Sedgwick County's share of the award, $181,260.50, is available to all departments within the Division of Public Safety in addition to Courthouse Security. Department heads submitted their requests to an internal advisory committee comprised of representatives from the following departments: Board of County Commissioners, Sheriff's Office, District Court, District Attorney, Division of Public Safety, Regional Forensic Science Center, Department of Corrections and Finance. Requests for the 2012 JAG funds were received from the following departments: District Attorney, Regional Forensic Science Center, Department of Corrections and the Sheriff's Office. The JAG Advisory Committee made its decisions based on priority need and eligibility under the JAG requirements.
