Grant Summary and Timeline: COMCARE's Community Crisis Center (CCC) opened on July 24, 2015, in Wichita, Kansas, and is a regional center that serves Sedgwick, Butler and Sumner Counties. There are several pertinent needs and enhancements for the CCC that are currently unmet, and that require additional funding.
The CCC will provide a comprehensive system of care for integrated assessment, triage, stabilization, engagement and referral to ongoing supports and services for those experiencing a behavioral health (BH) crisis. There was a need for a single access point for those experiencing a BH crisis, which led to this model.
The grant funds for this project will be used to make the CCC more comfortable for clients and guests. The facility officially opened on July 24, 2015. The larger space and new programming resulted in a need for furniture and artwork.
The furniture and other furnishings need to be selected with safety in mind for CCC consumers. These special needs require additional cost for safety reasons, and are implemented to stop people from self harming either intentionally or by accident. The list includes:
• Anti-ligature restrooms (including anti-ligature grab bars, sinks, toilet paper holders, soap holders, and mirrors) to be located in all restrooms open to consumer use
• Roto-Vinyl Armless Chairs - a total of eight that can be hooked together to form a sofa or sectional (they are also easy to disinfect and clean)
• Roto-Vinyl Arm Chairs - a total of two to be used in the front lobby that are more effective against bedbugs, and easier to disinfect ADA changing benches to be located in restrooms open to consumer use
• Privacy Curtains for the Detox/Sobering Unit
• Canvas artwork - We have a need for art throughout the Center. Canvas artwork is the safest art for consumers because they don't contain glass or sharp edges

Expected measurable outcomes:
The overarching goal of this project is to equip the CCC with safety measures to reduce the amount of ways that consumers could potentially self-harm. However, the specific outcomes of the CCC, which is the larger scope of this project, include improving care by:
• Improving engagement in community treatment, transitions and coordination of care between crisis assessment, crisis stabilization, crisis residential, substance use disorder treatment services, and follow-up contacts. The CCC will follow-up with transitional services such as peer support, supported employment, supported housing, Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment (IDDT) and case management. Thirty days from initial contact 70% of individuals served at the CCC crisis observation, residential crisis and crisis detox services will be actively engaged in treatment as evidenced by treatment records and follow-up contacts.
• Reducing admissions to the State Mental Health Hospitals by 15% through diversion of individuals who can be stabilized in community based crisis observation, crisis residential and substance use sobering or detoxification services, including medically supported detoxification services.
• Reducing the number of individuals seeking and receiving psychiatric treatment in the Via Christi and other local emergency departments by 15% through implementing expanded community crisis residential, crisis peer services and crisis detox services.
• Reducing utilization of inpatient psychiatric hospitalization for adults through diversion to crisis services. Thirty days from initial contact 80% of individuals served at the CCC will have avoided hospitalization as evidenced by treatment records and follow-up contacts.
• Reducing utilization of inpatient psychiatric hospitalization and PRTF for youth through diversion to crisis services and community based services. Thirty days from initial contact 85% of youth served at the CCC crisis residential services will be actively engaged in treatment and will have avoided hospitalization and PRTF as evidenced by treatment records and follow-up contacts.
