Grant Summary and Timeline: The United Methodist Health Ministry Fund based in Hutchinson, Kansas, has elected to renew a grant to the COMCARE Children's Services program for early childhood mental health. This grant will pay for COMCARE early childhood therapists to continue providing evidence-based parenting classes to families at no cost to them. It will also allow the therapists to continue doing community outreach, including screening young children in the community for social and emotional developmental concerns. Through these interventions, staff then work with the family to develop an action plan and refer them to services within COMCARE and through other service providers as needed.

This grant renewal is a one-year extension. It provides funding for part of the salaries of the early childhood clinicians, supplies and materials for the parenting classes and assessments, meals for the parenting classes, and childcare so that parents can attend the classes.

Personnel considerations: This grant provides partial funding for the salaries of two existing staff. This grant does not include any additions to the staffing table.

Expected measurable outcomes: Increasing the number of young children screened for social and emotional problems, enhancing coordination of referrals, and providing consistent and effective early interventions will benefit children, families, and the community. Through provider partnerships under this grant, COMCARE has identified ways to address each of these areas.

Alternatives: This grant allows COMCARE the opportunity to continue providing these services to the community, and increase the number of children that can benefit from screening and early interventions. WIthout it, COMCARE would have to identify an alternative source of funding to maintain these services.

Policy considerations: All Sedgwick County policies have been followed.

Legal considerations: The authority for this action is K.S.A. 19-101 and a simple majority vote is required.
