Body

Background:  In order to foster a truly integrated system of pre-hospital care in Sedgwick County, hiring of a full-time medical director with oversight of all of the major components (SCEMS, 911, SCFD and WFD) is critical.  A comprehensive EMS study in 2002 found that a major component needed to achieve seamless system function and consistency of training, quality assurance and medical direction as well as improve system integration and efficiency was to have a full-time medical director. The Medical Society of Sedgwick County strongly endorsed (and still does) that recommedation and the position was created.  The EMS service agreement between the City of Wichita and Sedgwick County also calls for a full-time EMSS Medical Director funded by the County.

The vacancy was advertised nationally and five strong candidates were selected for interview. There was a very deliberate, in-depth screening and selection process involving all of the participating agencies and senior management from Wichita and Sedgwick County and the Medical Society of Sedgwick County in coming to this decision.
