Grant Summary and Timeline: Oral health is one of five priority areas identified through the Sedgwick County Community Health Improvement Plan. In order to exercise good oral health practices, individuals need access to toothbrushes, floss and toothpaste; many people within the county don't have regular access to these items. Since 2010, the Delta Dental Foundation of Kansas has awarded 108,696 toothbrush kits to the Health Department to distribute to adults and children living in Sedgwick County.
This year's grant application request is for 33,552 toothbrush kits, which include toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss; the kits are valued at $19,124.64. If awarded, the Health Department, along with COMCARE, Sedgwick County Developmental Disability Organization (SCDDO) and the Department on Aging staff will collectively distribute the toothbrush kits to clients receiving program services. Toothbrush kits will also be disseminated to all students who take part in oral health education during National Children's Dental Health Month in Sedgwick County, throughout the school year, and during summer camps and other youth-oriented programs.
The kits complement other efforts within the department aimed at increasing current oral health education by utilizing best-practice strategies to reach over 20,000 children and 4,752 adults in Sedgwick County. Those efforts include leadership of the School-Based Dental Health Collaborative; a partnership between the community health clinics, local schools and the Children's Dental Clinic. The collaboration allows youth in all Title I schools to be screened for untreated tooth decay, provided dental sealants and oral health education.
The timeline for the grant is September 1, 2015 - August 31, 2016. This grant has been awarded to the Health Department for the past 5 years.

Analysis: If the donation of oral health kits is awarded and accepted from the Delta Dental of Kansas Foundation, more youth and adults in our community will have the education and tools they need to have good oral health.
According to the most recent data (2011-2012) from Kansas School Oral Health Screening Initiative, 16,046 youth in grades K-8 were screened for untreated decay in Sedgwick County. Results showed that out of those screened, 16.8% had visible and untreated tooth decay and 3.47% needed immediate and urgent care.
The toothbrush kits will be distributed to students who are screened at school, and distributed to children and siblings who are treated for care at the Children's Dental Clinic. In addition, SCDDO, COMCARE and Aging will have kits to distribute to their clients.
Expected measurable outcomes:
By the end of August 2016, 33,552 toothbrush kits will have been distributed to Sedgwick County residents who received services at one of the following DHHS locations:
• The Health Department will have distributed over 29,902 toothbrush kits;
• COMCARE and SCDDO will have distributed over 2,650 toothbrush kits; and
• The Department on Aging will have distributed over 1,000 toothbrush kits.
Alternatives:
To not apply for this funding and decrease the number of oral health kits distributed to youth and adults in Sedgwick County and potentially decrease the number of residents who practice good oral health care.
