Grant Summary and Timeline: This is an annual award that is issued to the State of Kansas and is shared among the three forensic labs in the State. This year it was determined that Sedgwick County will be allocated $31,519 to fund much needed supplies and services. The acquisition of a liquid chromatograph/mass spectrometer (LC/MS) will allow the laboratory to have a tool to enhance and streamline analytical procedures. This will allow the toxicology laboratory to meet the turn-around-time mandated by the Center's National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) accreditation. Since it is a sophisticated piece of analytical instrumentation, the LC/MS requires routine preventative maintenance and a service contract in the event of component failure. This type of preventative maintenance and/or repair is outside the capabilities of the scientific staff and must be provided by professional engineers. The request for funding is for funding the cost of the preventative maintenance and service contract for one year so that the LC/MS will remain operational.
The Zero-Air generator supplies part of the fuel gases needed for the operation of gas chromatographs with Flame ionization [FID] or Nitrogen-Phosphorous [NPD] detectors. The laboratory current has one that is rated for two instruments; however, four are connected to the unit. Given this configuration, only two of the instruments may be run simultaneously, thus creating inefficiencies in the analyses of toxicological evidence. The acquisition of another zero-air generator will allow simultaneous use of all four instruments, therefore improving analytical efficiency of the testing process.
PROJECT GOAL and OBJECTIVE:
Goal: The project's goal is to maintain a service contract and preventative maintenance program for the LC/MS and acquire a zero-air generator.
Objective: The primary objective is to maintain an operational LC/MS and improve operational efficiencies of the instrumental platforms utilizing the zero-air generator.
