Grant Summary and Timeline:
Oral health is one of five priority areas identified through the Sedgwick County Community Health Improvement Plan. In order to exercise good oral health practices, individuals need access to toothbrushes, floss, and toothpaste. Many people within the County do not have regular access to these items. Since 2010, Delta Dental of Kansas (DDKS) has awarded 186,764 toothbrush kits to the Health Department to distribute to adults and children living in Sedgwick County. This grant has been awarded to the Health Department for the past ten years.
This year’s grant application request is for 18,500 toothbrush kits. Each kit includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental floss, and they are valued at $10,545*. If awarded, Health Department staff will collectively distribute the toothbrush kits to clients receiving program services. Toothbrush kits will also be disseminated to all students who take part in oral health education during National Children's Dental Health Month in Sedgwick County, throughout the school year, and during summer camps and other youth-oriented programs.
The kits complement other efforts within the Department aimed at increasing current oral health education by utilizing best-practice strategies to reach over 18,000 children in Sedgwick County. Those efforts include leadership of the School-Based Dental Health Collaborative; a partnership between the community health clinics, local schools, and the Children's Dental Clinic. The collaboration allows youth in all Title I schools to be screened for untreated tooth decay, provided dental sealants, and oral health education.
*Est. Cost = $0.57 per kit.

Budget Authority Adjustment:

Personnel considerations:
This application does not include funding for personnel or change the personnel engaged in the project.
Analysis:
If the oral health kits are awarded and accepted from the DDKS Foundation, more youth and adults in our community will have the education and tools they need to have good oral health.
According to the most recent data (2014-2015) from the School Based Dental Health Collaborative, 41,025 youth in grades kindergarten through eighth grade were screened for untreated decay in Sedgwick County. Results showed that out of those screened, 21.17 percent had visible and untreated tooth decay and 3.39 percent needed immediate and urgent care.
The toothbrush kits will be distributed to students who are screened at school, and distributed to children and siblings who are treated for care at the Children's Dental Clinic.
Expected measurable outcomes:
By the end of August 2020, 18,500 toothbrush kits will have been distributed to Sedgwick County residents who received services at the Health Department.
Requirements from Sedgwick County: (reporting requirements or other actions required of the organization should the grant be awarded)
No reporting requirements. If awarded, the County is encouraged to post photos about the project to social media using #DDKSSmileKits and grants permission to DDKS to use any related photos for internal/external advertising and/or promotion of the Smile Kit program.
Alternatives:
To not apply for this funding, decrease the number of oral health kits distributed to youth and adults in Sedgwick County, and potentially decrease the number of residents who practice good oral health care.
