Grant Summary and Timeline: Control of Tuberculosis is a core public health function provided by the Health Department and mandated by state statutes. At this time, Sedgwick County has a year-to-date total of 4 new active Tuberculosis cases, which compares to 11 for all of 2013. Sedgwick County has a very diverse population consisting of many immigrants, students, and families originally from countries in which the disease is more easily acquired and the treatment not as rigorous as in the United States. Sedgwick County carries approximately one-fourth of the cases in the state annually. This annual grant provides funding to assist with the coordination of and access to care for persons among the indigent population with TB who pose a significant public health risk.

Analysis:
KDHE provides two grants to the Health Department for TB control and infectious disease work. This grant, the smaller of the two, is used primarily to contract with the University of Kansas School of Medicine for x-ray services to the indigent. It also pays for lab services, reimburses the county for vehicle use for directly observed therapy in the field, and includes some funding for operating supplies.
Expected measurable outcomes:
1. In 2014, assure that 95% of all active TB (tuberculosis) cases that are reported in Sedgwick County have started and completed therapy within the period specified by the physician managing their care. In 2013, this goal was exceeded at 100%. In 2014, this goal is currently being exceeded at 100%.
2. In 2014, assure that contact investigations are completed for 90% of all active TB (tuberculosis) cases reported in Sedgwick County within 6 months of the case report date in which a contact investigation is indicated. In 2013, this goal was exceeded at 100%. In 2014, this goal is currently being exceeded at 100%.
3. In 2014, assure 85% of all high risk latent TB (tuberculosis) infection cases reported in Sedgwick County who consent to begin treatment complete therapy within one year. In 2013, this goal was met at 87%. In 2014, this goal is currently being met at 100%.
Alternatives:
To not accept this grant funding, which would limit the capacity of the Health Department to provide TB testing and treatment services to the indigent population.
