Body

The Governing Body of Sedgwick County Fire District Number One elected to come under the provisions of the Kansas Public Employer-Employee Relations Act (PEERA) via Resolution #22-1979, dated January 17, 1979.

According to the State of Kansas Fire Marshal, there are currently 216 Fire Districts throughout the State of Kansas.  At this time, Sedgwick County Fire District Number One is the only Fire District to elect governance under PEERA.

Pursuant to K.S.A. 75-4321(c), any public employer may rescind its election to come under PEERA by a simple majority vote.  This recission will become effective upon the completion of the next budget year. Accordingly, any action taken in 2016 by the Governing Body of Sedgwick County Fire District Number One will automatically become effective January 1, 2018.

Alternative Action: Do not pass the Resolution, and Sedgwick County Fire District Number One will remain under PEERA.

12/13/2016 5:38 AM2 Against As a Retired Chief Officer of the Sedgwick County Fire Department, I opposed the action to rescind the employer participation in KPEERA adopted in 1979. It is sad to think that an employer-employee relationship in existence for so long and vibrant is suddenly going to be whisked away under the lack of communication and compromise. If the labor/management issues are that BAD for this to come to the BOCC, perhaps something wrong with the fire department management. I suggest to each of you initiate dialog with the Officers of Local 2612 and learn the issues first hand. Maybe their web page www.iaff2612.com and discover facts you might not know. The public and the firefighters are owned a factual why this suddenly needs rescinded. Please consider this action wisely! Don't allow your decision to be based solely or partially on bi-partisan politics. What is the 'hidden" agenda behind the cancellation of this agreement by the BOCC and/or he fire department administration?
