Grant Summary and Timeline: The Fire District is applying for a grant through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant. If the grant is awarded, the funds will be used to purchase two gear washer/extractors. Sedgwick County Fire District 1 is in need of two new washer/extractors to properly clean personal protective gear. The department's current washer/extractor is 18 years old. The life expectancy of these machines ranges from 7-13 years, and the Fire District has already exceeded this expectancy. By purchasing two units, the Fire District will be able to place a washer on the north and the south side of the district. This will allow for greater efficiency in getting gear cleaned and returned to the owner. Sedgwick County Fire District 1 strives to follow the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards when it comes to protecting employees, and the washer/extractor is an intricate part of the process. All gear is washed twice a year, every six months, on a regular basis. In addition, personal protective equipment (PPE) is washed after certain incidents, including house fires, car fires, grass fires, auto accidents where the PPE is exposed to fluids, and medical alarms where the PPE is exposed to blood born pathogens and other bodily fluids. The application process is open annually, and the current application deadline is December 5, 2014.
