Title
APPROVAL OF THE KDHE PERMIT APPLICATION FOR STERICYCLE, INC. FOR A SOLID WASTE TRANSFER STATION PERMIT FOR MEDICAL WASTE.
Presented by: Susan Erlenwein, Director, Environmental Resources.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Approve the permit application as consistent with the Sedgwick County Solid Waste Management Plan.
Body
The KDHE requires that the BOCC find that state solid waste permit applications are consistent with the local solid waste plans.  Stericycle, Inc, has been operating a medical waste transfer station since 2001 at their current facility, located at 3535 W. 30th St. S.  This permit application is required to move the facility operations to a new location at 3811 S. West St.  The Sedgwick County Solid Waste Management Committee reviewed this application at their meeting on September 8, 2014 and found that is consistent with the Sedgwick County Solid Waste Management Plan, which includes the proper disposal of medical waste.

Legal Considerations: K.S.A. 65-3407(m) requires that before KDHE can review a permit application for a solid waste facility, the applicant must obtain a certification, from the local governing body responsible for solid waste planning, that the proposed facility is consistent with the local solid waste management plan. Under K.S.A. 65-3405 Sedgwick County is responsible for, and has adopted, a local solid waste management plan.
