Resolution reappointing Scott W. Kipper, M.D., as a Deputy District Coroner.

Recommended Action: Approve the resolution.
Background: KSA 22a-226 provides for the appointment of one or more Deputy District Coroners by the District Coroner with the approval of the Board of County Commissioners. Dr. Scott Kipper currently serves as the a Deputy Coroner, who is one of two Deputy District Coroners with the Regional Forensic Science Center. The County is renewing his employment contract at the Center for an additional four years. Reappointment as a Deputy District Coroner must occur concurrent with his employment contract.
Alternatives: Leave Sedgwick County without one of three pathologists, only perform Sedgwick County cases and lose the off-setting revenue which covers the cost of the additional pathologist. In addition, lose the surge capacity afforded to Sedgwick County by having three pathologists.
Financial Considerations: The funds for the salary and benefits for the position are within the approved 2014 budget.
Legal Considerations: The authority for this action is K.S.A. 22a-226. A simple majority vote is required.
